2023 Toyota BZ4X is the automaker’s first production electric vehicle and the only one currently offered by the brand. It’s a small SUV about the size of a RAV4 and closely related to the all-new Subaru Solterra.
The electric SUV makes 201 horsepower in front-wheel-drive models and 214 horsepower in all-wheel-drive models. The Neither figure is, particularly noteworthy, same applies to ranges. Depending on which configuration you get, the bZ4X has an EPA-estimated range of 222-252 miles.
That’s fine, but other EVs go further, and we found the 2023 Toyota BZ4X real-world range as tested by Edmunds to be disappointing.
2023 Toyota BZ4X Interior
The Toyota BZ4X interior is, conservative in terms of design and innovation, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The touchscreen interface is a step up from what Toyota has used in most of its vehicles over the past few years. The screen isn’t as large as some competitors, but it’s clear and responsive, and the menu structure itself is easy to navigate.
In theory, the bZ4X’s interior isn’t as roomy as its rivals, but in practice, both rows of seats have enough room for all but the tallest passenger. Ample room and a high ride height make getting in and out a breeze. The center console is tall, but otherwise there’s plenty of room to stretch out in front.
For better or worse, the 2023 Toyota BZ4X feels more like a regular SUV, such as the Toyota RAV4, than a true EV. It’s faster than most small gas-powered SUVs, but slower than most competing electric vehicles like the Tesla Model Y or the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Brakes provided adequate stopping power, but we found pedal to be a bit soft and inconsistent, making it difficult to stop smoothly every time. Another downside is the lack of full one-pedal riding. Many EVs can use regenerative braking to slow down (rather than just coast) and stop when you lift off the accelerator.

2023 Toyota BZ4X Specs and Review
The navigation system is responsive and easy to use, using Google-derived POI and other location information. Over-the-air updates ensure information stays current. You can enter navigation instructions manually or using built-in voice commands. Air conditioning, audio, etc. can also be adjusted through voice control. Our test bZ4X featured JBL’s premium audio system, but we weren’t impressed with its sound quality.
There are many ways to connect your phone. The bZ4X has 4 USB-C ports, 1 USB-A port, and a wireless charging pad. Additionally, Toyota offers wireless connectivity for smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The bZ4X’s advanced driver aids work well and are easy to use. Adaptive cruise control changes speed smoothly and maintains a tight distance to the vehicle in front. Other driver assistance systems, such as lane departure warning, also work well.
There’s 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats (25.8 cubic feet if the 2023 Toyota BZ4X is equipped with the JBL audio system). This is an average number of classes, but the space itself is large and available. The load floor can also be lowered, which is helpful because the slender roofline limits the height of items.
EPA-estimated range for the bZ4X ranges from 222 to 252 miles, depending on trim and all-wheel drive. Our front-wheel-drive bZ4X Limited test vehicle logged 242 miles.
The energy consumption we observed also doesn’t match the EPA’s estimates. The government says the bZ4X should consume about 26 kilowatt-hours of electricity for every 100 miles driven. On our dedicated EV test track, we measured a consumption of 28.5 kWh.
As far as DC fast charging goes, the front-wheel-drive 2023 Toyota BZ4X can charge up to 150 kW, which is pretty good for an EV in this price range and should reduce charging times under ideal conditions.
